The Early Church : A Pattern of Authority
1. By whom is the authority given?
A.
By Christ Himself
Matthew 28:18
Then Jesus came to them
and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
John 3:35 The Father loves the Son and has placed
everything in his hands.
John 13:3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all
things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;
Ephesians 1:20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the
dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far
above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is
invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22 And
God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be

2:9 Therefore God
exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every
name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
B. The results of clear authorization
Luke
24:47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins
will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
A. For witnessing to Christ
Luke 24: 48 You are witnesses of these things.
B.
The implications of this purpose
Acts
2:42 They devoted
themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of
bread and to prayer.
Acts
4:4 But many who
heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about
five thousand.
Acts 6:7 So the word of God spread. The number of
disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became
obedient to the faith.
Romans 14:18 because anyone who serves Christ in this
way is pleasing to God and receives human approval.
3. By what means is this authority imparted?
A. Through the Holy Spirit
Romans 10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the
message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.
2 Timothy 3:15 and how from infancy you have known the
Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in
Christ Jesus.
Acts 2:38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized,
every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.
And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Success for the Church
Acts 10:34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism 35 but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right. 36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. 39 “We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross, 40 but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. 41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” 44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, 47 “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.
Matthew 26:26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” 27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the[a] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Acts 2:41 Those who accepted his message were
baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. 42 They
devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking
of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many
wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers
were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property
and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they
continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their
homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising
God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their
number daily those who were being saved.
Acts 8:26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip,
“Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” 27 So
he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important
official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of
the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, 28 and
on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the
prophet. 29 The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay
near it.”
30 Then Philip ran up to the chariot and
heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are
reading?” Philip asked. 31 “How can I,” he said, “unless someone
explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.32 This
is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading: “He was led like a sheep to
the slaughter,
and as a lamb before its shearer is silent,
so he did not open his mouth. 33 In his humiliation he was
deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken
from the earth.” 34 The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who
is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” 35 Then
Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news
about Jesus. 36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some
water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of
my being baptized?” 38 And
he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down
into the water and Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of
the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did
not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.
